PLANNING
Planning (isn't so straightforward)
Sooo, I need to plan a trip , well first of all lets choose a destination !
I've learnt a few lessons the hard way on this subject , there's no way you can make an infallible plan but one can do ones best , I got very stuck in Catania because my lodgings although central were beyond my limpable distance to a public transport hub , I ended up very limited , not to mention the 4 lane roundabout you had to cross to access the bus station,
When I first started getting claudication I wasn't aware of things like airport assistance and found myself in the shit several times , one that sticks in my memory is Luton airport arrivals , all other passengers were streaking off ahead and I realized that it's a long long way to baggage check , it took me a long time and a lot of pain to get there , everyone had left and mine was a lonely suitcase all alone going round and round, customs was about to shut up shop and were amazed to see me hobble up .
Also the passenger ramp for a ferry , I couldn't get up it , I could see the crew getting impatient and one of them came down to try and help by taking my bag , bless him for trying to be helpful , but taking my bag won't make my legs work faster as much as I try !
So now I get assistance wherever possible , many tales of that to come in future posts.
Back to planning , I look for destinations that have a good public transport network or tuktuk, or is flat enough for an ebike , or an aquatic destination where I can kayak , ebike , I can do that because I remain seated , kayak likewise ,and then find cheap acommodation within access distance to the above .
There is always sections where you are supposed to sprout wings and fly because stuff doesn't match up .I was recently dropped off from a taxi at an airport that was a good 200 meters walk to a check in point , there was no other way , the assumption is that all disabilities have a helper , well in your dreams,I have had raised eyebrows when I say I am alone !
I recommend getting all help possible with every mode of transport , it's a bit of a faff booking it in advance for every step of the journey and that has to be done with every transport provider .
